Midnight Special: Director Jeff Nichols Calls Adam Driver the Most Important Actor of Our Generation

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Jeff Nichols has been doing the rounds promoting his upcoming sci-fi flick, Midnight Special, which opened with plenty of optimism to say the least at its limited festival unveiling.

The director turned his attention to Adam Driver when talking with Indiewire. Nichols was clearly blown away by the Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor, though had initial hesitance toward the casting suggestion due to where it had come from.

"...I have to give credit to Greg Silverman, who's the head studio for Warner Brothers. They had worked with Adam... and they said, 'So what about this Adam Driver?' and usually, no offense to studio executives, but you get their notes and you're like, 'Yeah, okay...'

"But this was an amazing note, and so I flew to Brooklyn and I met him and I still didn't really know about him to be honest. I just didn't know if he fit in this part but we gave it a shot and he immediately showed up and started making interesting choices."

Describing the kinds of things the actor brings to the table, questioning the role he's playing, exploring the character he's inhabiting, Nichols said that, "I think, the whole 'Star Wars' thing aside, I think he's probably gonna be one of the most important actors of our generation."

Quite the prediction there, particularly when excluding Star Wars by alluding to it almost as a blip on the actor's resume. Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see just what impressed the director so much.
