'Narcos' co-creator developing El Chapo series for History

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell History has put into development #Cartel, a drama series detailing the story of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. The series hails from Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato.

Written by Brancato, #Cartel will explore the global drug wars through El Chapo, who is regarded as the most powerful drug lord in history. It is described as a story of power, money, sex, and the human cost of the drug wars. It will follow the drug lord's rise to power, and will explore the world of drug cartels who use social media to build their gangs, threaten rivals, and maintain their image.

Unique to the trade, El Chapo maintains relationships inside the entertainment and music industry that stretched beyond Mexican borders and into the U.S.

“The show is a metaphor for the lives we present on the internet, the secret selves we reveal in supposedly private communication, and the risks of not-so-humble-bragging on social media,” Brancato said.

In January El chapo made headlines after being captured after a six-month manhunt. It was revealed following his arrest that Mexican TV actress del Castillo and Sean Penn had secretly met with El Chapo. Penn posted the interview for Rolling Stone, while del Castillo still owns the feature rights to El Chapo's life.
