'Outcast' Director Promises a Very Different Exorcism Story
Filmmaker Adam Wingard has shifted to TV to direct the pilot for Robert Kirkman's (The Walking Dead) latest comic-to-TV adaptation, the exorcism horror Outcast.
The pilot debuts next week at SXSW, anad Wingard promises a very different possession story than the tired old trope we've become accustomed to. The story revolves around Kyle Barnes, he attempts to break free of a life-long 'curse' that's seen him constantly surrounded by those under the spell of demonic possession.
Speaking with Indiewire, the director said that "It's probably more of a drama than anything I've done before. Usually most of the projects I work on are grounded a little more in having a strong comedic base. So that's something that's a little different.
"Essentially it's an exorcism story, but in true Kirkman fashion, he's created a universe where it's partially familiar but a totally new take on it. There's lots of surprises, so I guess the best summary is it's a new kind of possession story."
Wingard describes the show as having a destination, as opposed to becoming an "exorcism of the week thing." Audiences demand this more and more these days, with serialised storytelling almost insistent on a direction in order to avoid feeling aimless, particularly for drama.
He insists that the comic books are a guide, not a bible, and that he wanted to veer away from the colour palette of the book, which gives it a more surrealistic appearance.
No premiere date has yet been set, but we can find out what to expect when the film is received at SXSW.
