'Preacher' Season 2 to Introduce Major Comic Book Villain; EP Talks Clearing the Deck

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell With Preacher coming to the end of its first season, it literally goes out with a bang, clearing the excess baggage left over that was Annville and sending Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy on their way.

“A sinful, Sodom and Gomorrah-type town, blowing up on its sh*t,” Preacher EP/co-creator Sam Catlin tells Deadline, “it’s all a direct result of the absence of God.” Nearly every character we came to learn and, in some cases, love, are long gone.

“In the end, we had to clear the deck, there’s so many great characters from the comic to come,” Catlin said. “In the first season we really wanted to establish Jesse’s relationship to God and lack thereof. We needed to put Jesse’s journey into context, and his mission for next season.”

With the Saint of Killers now on Earth and hunting the Preacher, Catlin teases a well known comic book villain to come. “The figure in white, and fanboys will know who that is,” said Catlin. “They’ve already seen the character briefly.” This sighting came in episode 3.

The figure in white is Herr Starr, second in command for the Grail, a secret organisation that controls world's governments and protects the bloodline of Jesus. Catlin also promises that the fate of Jesse's father and all the background to that side of things is coming, much to the excitement of comic book readers (and this writer included).

Regarding changes to the source, Catlin had this to say. “When something finally comes to life, (Preacher co-creator) Garth Ennis himself has said, ‘The comics are the comics, and the TV show has different demands.’”
