Robert Downey Jr Teaming with Richard Linklater on Podcast Adaptation
Robert Downey Jr. has just begun filming on Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War, but that doesn't mean he's not looking at his next project down the line, and this one puts him together with Richard Linklater for a curious film based on an episode of a podcast.
The film will be based on the podcast episode titled Man of the People from Gimlet Media's Reply All Podcast, which aired on January 19, 2017. The untitled film bases itself on the material, which “tells the true story of charlatan Dr. John Brinkley who scams his way to fame and fortune using fake medicine, populism, and the newest technology of the time: radio. As Brinkley’s fame grows, he gets the attention of Dr. Morris Fishbein, editor of the AMA who begins a decade long quest to take him down.”
Downey Jr. will produce alongside Susan Downey and Annapurna's Megan Ellison, while Linklater will co-produce. The project marks Linklater's follow-up to the popular Everybody Wants Some! and will pull Downey Jr. away from Marvel obligations, which have consumed most of his on-screen time as of late.
