Robin Lord Taylor Talks Penguin's Rise Ahead of Gotham Season 2

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Robin Lord Taylor, who plays the Penguin in 'Gotham', talks about the various shake-ups to come in the aftermath of the season 1 finale, and what it means for his character.

"More power," is Taylor's simple answer to why the Penguin is so hell bent on conquering. He then elaborated, saying "I learned when I went back to the comics, he was a bullied kid for the way he looked and his interests and got the crap beat out of him every day, was treated like garbage".

That need for power, Taylor explained, is "deeply rooted in his psyche". This hard life that Penguin has led so far might just add to the fire in his belly as a result of Jim Gordon's actions late last season.

"I truly believe that Oswald wanted to be Jim's friend and wanted to connect with him," Taylor said. "That's all different now."

With new faces cropping up in Gotham, not to mention behind the walls of Arkham Asylum, the Penguin has a lot of work to do yet despite having climbed to the top. Season 2 premieres September 21 on FOX.
