'The Magnificent Seven' Director Antoine Fuqua Drops Out of 'Scarface', Diego Luna to Star

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Antoine Fuqua is the latest director to come on and then drop out of Universal's Scarface remake, this time due to scheduling clashing with Sony's sequel to The Equalizer. Despite the loss of its director, Universal has found its star. Taking advantage of his starring turn in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the studio has cast Diego Luna to play the lead role.

With The Equalizer 2 slated for September 14, 2018, Fuqua's hands were reportedly tied given that he didn't want to depart that film, and with Sony unwilling to wait on Scarface. Meeting with replacement directors is already underway at Universal. The aim is to start shooting in spring with Luna.

Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter wrote the most recent script for the Scarface remake, while prior to that David Ayer, Paul Attanasio, and Jonathan Herman have all made attempts. Prior to Fuqua joining on, David Yates and Pablo Larrain both circled the project.

The remake will keep the same premise of an immigrant who arrives in the U.S. and claws himself up to the top of the criminal underworld, though it will shift to present-day Los Angeles, and focus on a Mexican immigrant disillusioned by the American Dream.

While Rogue One was a big film for Luna's credentials, a role like this could well and truly launch him into becoming a household name. It's a big opportunity, and one he'll want to take with both hands.
