They Have Done It: 'Avengers: Endgame' Dethrones 'Avatar' to Become Biggest Movie of All Time

ZachPerilstein ZachPerilstein Disney Reporter Well, everyone thought it couldn't be done. Avengers: Endgame has dethroned Avatar as the top-grossing film of all time.

Avatar's reign at the box office lasted ten years. A James Cameron film no longer sits up at the top. Endgame made $1.9 billion at the international box office and $853 domestically.

Avengers: Endgame was re-released in theaters last month as an attempt to reach the record. And it worked. Endgame currently has made $2.78 billion at the box office.

“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to these historic heights,” Alan Horn, Disney co-chairman and chief creative officer, said in a statement. “Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”

Disney wins in this scenario as their purchase of Marvel keeps looking better by the day, and their purchase of Fox allows them to control the future of Avatar which is now the 2nd biggest film of all time.
