Thief Video Game Coming to the Big Screen
The rights to Square Enix Video Game Thief have been acquired by Straight Up Films. The adaptation will see producers Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh joined by Straight Up's Marisa Polvino and Kate Cohen.
Adam Mason and Simon Boyes will write the screenplay for the dark fantasy-set series, in which the world is ruled by a tyrant who uses dark magic to establish control over the people.
"This popular game is entirely unique within the genre, which is why we're particularly excited to be working with these canny, dedicated filmmakers to bring it to the screen," Polvino and Cohen said.
Game adaptations are fraught with risk, and fans of the franchises approach them with plenty of caution. That being said, both Warcraft and Assassin's Creed may be set to reverse an ugly trend for video game films, and hopefully we'll start seeing those properties receive the deserved treatment.
