'Warcraft' Projected for a $25 Million Domestic Opening Weekend
With Warcraft having been in the works since early 2014 (after spending an enormous time on visual effects), it looks like the filmmaking work and attention might not reap good results for the latest video game adaptation, which based on projections may open dramatically lower than hoped.
Tracking indicates that Warcraft, which was made on a $160 million production budget excluding marketing and ad costs, is unlikely to earn any more than $25 million at the U.S. box office on opening weekend.
These projections have it sitting lower than The Conjuring 2, Now You See Me 2, and likely the follow-up weekend for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Given the enormous production period, Universal and Legendary would be severely underwhelmed by such a performance.
Early reception has been pretty negative. Eighteen reviews so far have it at a 22% Rotten Tomatoes rating, before a consensus. Metacritic has it slightly higher at 37%. Overseas numbers might be the key, as the film opened in first place in eleven markets, taking $9.3 million.
The film opens June 10, and sources indicate it needs to double its budget to break even,
