When Tom Cruise's Mummy Reboot Will Arrive in Theaters

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Universal is steadily making progress on their intended classic monsters universe, and Tom Cruise signing on for The Mummy was a massive boost for the developing franchise.

Now, Variety is reporting that a release date has been set. Initially slated for a March 24, 2017 release, The Mummy has been pushed back to June 9, 2017. This joins a huge number of films that have been shuffled around this week.

The studio seems confident that The Mummy can prove a success, and in addition to Tom Cruise producer Alex Kurtzman is on board to direct the film. Kurtzman is a major producer who has only directed a handful of features but made a name for himself in bringing dozens of films and TV shows to life.

Jon Spaihts, from Prometheus and Doctor Strange, is penning the script. No plot details are known at this point, only the promise that this will be a very different rendition of the Mummy. It's said to be set in the past, as opposed to being a period piece like earlier films.

With superhero franchises sprouting and thriving, can Universal's monsters do that same?
