Disney Predict 'Tomorrowland' Will Make $50 Million on Memorial Day Weekend

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong Disney's sci-fi adventure tale Tomorrowland starring George Clooney is being earmarked to win the Memorial Weekend battle at the box office despite no one truly knowing what the film is about.

The studio believe the film can crack the $50 million marker over the three day weekend. Directed by Brad Bird, it should manage to pull in more than $40 million over the weekend, but with this film not being a sequel or remake, it may find it tricky forging out its own identity. In the past, original movies never had a problem drawing in audiences, but in the current climate, having an existing fan base benefits a film standing out greatly in a crowded summer slate.

"They’re taking the approach that they want to surprise the public and not give too much away in their trailer, but the public is conditioned to know a lot about whatever movie they’re walking into,” said Phil Contrino, VP and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com, adding: “The big thing is the Disney name. It just brings in families.”

Tomorrowland will go up against Fox’s Poltergeist, a remake of the classic horror film. Trailers for this movie have been strong and reaction to them positive. It's a real possibility that Poltergeist could steal away a key demographic of Tomorrowland: teenagers. Poltergeist is on track to debut to between $25 million to $30 million over the four-day weekend, according to industry tracking services.

It'll be an interesting weekend for Disney, that's for sure. Their goal of $50 million over Memorial Day weekend may be a tad ambitious, but it's safe to say, there is currently nothing harder in Hollywood than selling an original idea to a paying audience.
