Harvey Weinstein Talks 'The Hateful Eight' and 'Southpaw' at Cannes
The Cannes Film Festival kicked off yesterday to a star studded opening night. Today, in the South of France, it was all down to business and it started with Harvey Weinstein and the Weinstein Company's presentation.
During their presentation, the company showcased trailers for their upcoming slate of releases, with Quentin Tarntino's The Hateful Eight, and boxing flick, Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal, being the focus of the presentation.
Weinstein made some bold statements during their respective presentations. After a showing of the first full trailer of The Hateful Eight, Weinstein noted that he and Tarantino have worked together on eight films over 22 years. “It’s the best marriage I’ve had,” he said. “Don’t tell Georgina (Weinstein's wife.)” The footage predominantly featured clips of Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Southpaw then had its new trailer revealed. Weinstein compared the movie to Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull, which is bold statement in itself. He then went on to talk of his outrage that Gyllenhaal was snubbed at the Oscars for his performance in Nightcrawler (which we don't disagree with), and that “We’ll get revenge, this transformation in ‘Southpaw’ is amazing." Weinstein also explained that Southpaw had been selected for Cannes but can't run in competition as Gyllenhaal is a member of this years jury.
The Hateful Eight is scheduled for release on November 13, 2015, and Southpaw due for release on July 24, 2015.
