Fifth Bourne movie pushed back to 2016

Has the 5th Bourne movie been rescheduled to tempt Matt Damon back?

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong A couple days ago, we reported that Universal has pushed back the fifth Bourne movie from 14th August 2015 to the 15th July 2016.

The assumption was that the summer of 2015 was far too crowded, (which it is) and the August date would be a better fit for the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton. However, there may have been an ulterior motive to Universal rescheduling Bourne 5 to 2016.

The reason behind this move may be even more satisfying for Bourne fans— it may well open the door for Matt Damon to reprise his most notable role. As you may know, every time Damon is asked about whether or not he'll return to the franchise, he says he would (as we reported here: http://bit.ly/1lVskyH ) but he has always maintained the stance that he would only do so if The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass was also on board.

Greengrass' approach has in the past made Universal very uneasy. He's a director who likes to shoot a lot and then find the film in the editing room— an approach that never sits well with studios. There is also the matter that Greengrass and the studio have fallen out in the past when Green Zone flopped.

This is an interesting development on the Bourne 5 movie, but it is worth noting that this is mere speculation. Hopefully, this rumour will wind up being true (sorry Jeremy Renner) as everyone would take great satisfaction seeing Matt Damon return as Jason Bourne, even Greengrass didn't return to direct.
