Is there an Indiana Jones 5 in development?

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong There are reports floating around movie blogs suggesting there may well be a fifth Indiana Jones movie in the works, after cinematographer Janusz Kaminski dropped a nugget of information in a recent Variety article.

Ever since Disney picked up the rights for the Indiana Jones franchise from Paramount Pictures to complete their acquisition of properties from LucasFilm, there has been numerous whispers regarding a potential fifth Indiana Jones movie or even a possible reboot of the franchise with Bradley Cooper's name being mentioned as the lead.

Such noises regarding a reboot seem to have been muted for now, but the prospect of a new Indy movie seems to be gathering momentum once again.

In a recent article in Variety about cinematographer Kaminski, it is mentioned that his next project will indeed be the fifth movie in the Indiana Jones series. Kaminski has worked alongside Steven Spielberg on numerous projects in the past, such a Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List— the latter earning Kaminski an Oscar. Here is an excerpt from the article in Vareity;

"Since then, Kaminski has made more than a dozen films with Steven Spielberg, earning two Oscars along the way. His credits include “Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Diving Bell & the Butterfly.” His next project is the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones movie.'

What is interesting about this possible news, is Spielberg's slate is currently quite stacked. He is working on a unnamed Cold War drama with Tom Hanks and is then scheduled to direct an adaptation of The B.F.G. Both are scheduled for 2015 and 2016 releases, respectively. This would mean that a fifth Indiana Jones movie would— at the earliest— go into production in late 2016 or early 2017, leading to Kaminski to not work on any project for almost two years.

Although the source is Variety, who are generally very reliable, there isn't a direct quote from Kaminski regarding the project. He may of fed Variety this information for them to relay in the article or Variety have been told something no one else knows, from other trustworthy sources.

Whatever the case may be, it has certainly got movie bloggers around the internet furiously tapping away on their keyboards. Only time will tell if a new Indiana Jones movie is on its way, but the question on my lips is... do we really need another Indiana Jones movie?
