Sony Pictures Want to Remake 'Romeo and Juliet' in the Style of '300'
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Sony is in final negotiations to buy 'Verona,' a retelling of the classic Romeo and Juliet story that reportedly “re-imagines the classic love story through a lens of an epic, 300-style world.”
This potential remake of the classic William Shakespeare tale will go under the name of 'Verona,' the city in which the story is set. Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland) is attached to produce.
The full idea behind this re-imaging is being kept under wraps at the moment, but the vision to make it in the style of Zack Snyder's '300' is what seems to have appealed to Sony. When the original '300' was released back in 2006, it took the box office by storm bringing in a whopping $456million, leaving moviegoers salivating over its visuals. But its sequel, '300: Rise of an Empire,' didn't strike the same chord with audiences, with its box office numbers only reaching half of what the original made. So that begs the question, are audiences still excited about these types of visual movies? That remains to be seen, but this is an interesting project given quality and notoriety of the material.
Producer Roth, is currently in post-prodcution on 'Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass,' the sequel to the billion dollar grossing Disney movie, and is in pre-production on 'The Huntsman,' the sequel to Universal's 2012 retelling of the Snow White fairy tale.
