The Court of Owls Confirmed for Gotham Television Series
The second season of Gotham began this past Monday, much to the excitement of Batman fans and Cop-show fans alike. Gotham has been plagued with villain after villain throughout its long history in the comics, but the Court Of Owls, a recent addition to the Batman mythos, has been controlling Gotham from the shadows for centuries. If you read comics at all, the Court of Owls series of Batman Comics illustrates some of Wayne’s toughest battles to date– nearly losing at every turn.
It is an exciting prospect, then, to possibly have the same Court of Owls make an appearance in the television series. I mean, after all if they have been controlling Gotham for centuries, then shouldn’t they at least make an appearance in the prequel? Show-runner Bruno Heller recently confirmed their use in the new show in a recent interview with comicbook.com.
When asked if the newly introduced Theo (James Frain) and Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas) would tie into the Court of Owls, Heller replied:
“I won’t say that it’s part of – I don’t even want to say that, because I don’t want to spoil part of the story… The Court of Owls is deep, deep, deep Gotham mythology.”
“We are absolutely going to explore that world down the line,” he continued to say,
“Looking at the longevity of the show, we have to hold some cards back, we can’t just throw all of the elements, all of the story at once…The Court of Owls is a brilliant conceit that will absolutely be part of our storytelling. I just won’t tell you when.”
And just to clarify once again, the Court of Owls was introduced early in DC’s New 52 line of comics and the syndicate features many of Gotham’s most elite and prominent citizens, some of their oldest citizens made up its core. And to make matters worse, they are armed with highly-trained assassins called “Talons” that are nearly successful in smiting Batman. They are so powerful that they even know that Bruce Wayne IS Batman, not many of his foes can claim that feat.
Batman fans and Gotham TV fans alike are excited at the prospect of seeing the Court of Owls in the future of the show and I, for one, cannot wait to see Gordon take on some of these insane people. I mean, so far the villains of Gotham are menacing… but I am not so sure that they are “Court of Owls”-menacing.
