The Top Grossing Movies of 2014

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong 2014 will be remembered as a year that featured a lot fun and exciting movies being released, but it was also be known as a year that saw a decline in box office attendance.

It was revealed last week that attendance figures at theatres in 2014 was at 20-year low. Figures released saw an estimated 1.26 billion cinema tickets sold during 2014 — that's the lowest number since 1995.

A reason for this slump in ticket sales may be down to the rise in ticket prices and increased use of pirate sites. These numbers result in box office revenue being down approximately 5% from 2013, which is the lowest year-to-year decline in nearly a decade. 2014 is the first time since 2011 that admissions have dipped below 1.3 billion. That equals a 6% decline from 2013, when a total of 1.34 billion tickets were sold.

Under performing movies such as The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Transformers: Age of Extinction failed to make any real splash at the domestic box office. When released worldwide, their increase in revenue came primarily from the international box office which helped them recover from their sluggish summer. In Transformers case, 80% of its total gross came directly from the international market— in particular China— making it the only movie to make over a billion dollars. It's also worth noting that many non-franchise or tentpole movies faired very strongly at the international market this year.

The only real success stories in 2014 came by the way of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 - the only movies to surpass the $300 million mark at the domestic box office. In comparison, there were 4 movies that crossed that mark in 2013, including 3 that hit $400 million.
