Heil Hydra! Hugo Weaving talks about playing Red Skull in Captain America

Red Skull is a super villain, that all other villains were based on after that. We wanted Red Skull to be scary as hell. And we wanted people to take him seriously. And there were two things that we knew would be required. Incredible design for the Red Skull itself. And we needed an actor, who could pull it off in a way that was downright frighting. And the first name that came up was Hugo Weaving.

Hugo Weaving: The character I play is called Johann Schmidt. He's a German officer. He had been working with this scientist Erskine. He was developing this serum. And Schmidt takes the serum and injects himself and then becomes Red Skull.

Embrace it proudly, without fear.

The Schmidt you see at the beginning of the film is actually... he looks a little bit like me. But Schmidt's my face is actually the mask that he wears I suppose to get on in the world without people being horrified by the way he looks. But Red Skull is the character he has become as a result of the serum. So he has super human powers. And he's like all good villains, interested in dominating everyone else and controlling the world.

Heil Hydra. Heil Hydra!

Chris Evans: There's nobody else that could be the part the way he's doing it. It's perfect.

Playing Red Skull was great and I'm incredibly excited about it.
