'Bumblebee' Official Trailer

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Paramount's prequel spin-off follows the mystical bond between Hailee Steinfeld and earth's mightiest autobot, Bumblebee

Though Bumblebee is technically the sixth film in Paramount's Transformers decade-long series, it's hard to resist the twinge of emotion that separates Travis Knight's live-action debut from Michael Bay's previous installments.

'Bumblebee' Trailer Paramount Pictures

Paramount's second trailer transports us long before Shia LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky first met Bumblebee, back to the '80s where a care-free spirit named Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld) first meets the scared and battle-scarred autobot now disguised as the iconic yellow VW Bug.

Of course it doesn't take long for Charlie to discover that 'Bee' is actually a brave and courageous robot who is also on the run from Sector 7 agents led by John Cena along with a pair of Decepticon's voiced by Angela Bassett and Justin Theroux.

But in case you were wondering if Bumblebee must “protect earth and its people” alone, the Autobots behemoth leader - Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) - sends his sincerest regards telling the mighty VW Bug that he and his fellow Autobots are sitting this one out. Gee, thanks boss.

While the jury is still out whether or not Bumblebee will be a box office hero, it's hard not to root for the little prequel that could, especially given the wondrous coming-of-age vibe exhibited between Steinfeld and 'Bee'.

Travis Knight’s Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
