'Charlie's Angels' Reboot Eyeing Kristen Stewart; Release date set June 7, 2019

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Just 15 years ago, a thirteen year-old Kristen Stewart was cutting her teeth in Hollywood alongside Oscar-winning actor Jodie Foster, in David Fincher's claustrophobic-thriller Panic Room.

At the same time, Columbia Pictures released their big screen reboot of 1976's American crime drama Charlie's Angels, replacing original television series stars Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Jaclyn Smith with established young talents Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu. Both 2000's Charlie's Angels and 2003's Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle went on to gross a total of $533 million worldwide and no one has really talk about either film since. Well, that is until now.

Sony Pictures decided it's time to reboot 2000's American action-comedy eyeing none other than Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper star Kristen Stewart, to play one of the three independent, ass-kicking members of the female private detective agency led by an unseen millionaire named "Charlie". Sony is also said to be interested in Oscar-winning Actor Lupita Nyong'o to join Stewart along with a tba third Angel. Suddenly, this Angel's reboot sounds, dare I say, worth talking about?

Okay, who's directing this reboot?

Angels redux 2 speculation began in 2015, shortly after Pitch Perfect 2 director, Elizabeth Banks was asked in passing by Sony execs to helm the project. According to Banks, it didn't take long to visualize her 'take' on a new iteration of the crime fighting trio, and received the green light shortly after pitching her vision. In fact, Sony has such confidence in Banks, "Charlie's Angels" has already been slated for a June 7, 2019 North American release, between John Wick 3 (May 17) and Toy Story 4 (June 21).

In an era that's ushering in female-led reboots and spin-offs (Ghostbusters, Oceans 8, The Nice Guys), this one feels slightly different since it's a reboot of a reboot (perhaps that makes you feel worse) but marks the first time that a female-led american action film or any female-led film for that matter has been rebooted. Perhaps more noteworthy here, Angels is being rebooted with a female director at the helm. And if it's going to happen, let's for a moment temper our knee-jerk cynicism in exchange for a narrative that transcends the obvious argument. Not all reboots have to be unoriginal and it's entirely possible a better story could be told when creative talents beyond the same ol' gender (or race) are afforded the opportunity.

Kudos to Sony.

How about you? You on board for 2019's Charlie's Angels?
