'Godzilla vs. Kong' Will Throwdown and Adam Wingard Is Directing

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor

Yesterday, Deadline reported Adam Wingard, director Blair Witch (2016) and the upcoming Netflix Original Death Note will helm the long-anticipated fourth film of Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures MonsterVerse series: Godzilla vs. Kong. This comes as welcome news as Wingard is no stranger to the scene having directed 2011 and 2014 standout films - You're Next and The Guest; essentials if you have not seen any of Wingard's prior works.

As for Godzilla vs. Kong, it’s unknown how much of the story will draw upon Toho’s 1963 original King Kong vs. Godzilla, but we know Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean), J. Michael Straczynski (World War Z), and Patrick McKay (Star Trek Beyond) will script the battle of the titans.

While Gareth Edward's Godzilla (2014) was a competent but uninspiring entry, it was difficult to dial back the skepticism when Legendary and Warner Bros. first announced plans for the 'fight of the century' back in 2015. But since this year's Kong: Skull Island's release, the dial changed from skeptical to optimistic. But perhaps you were already optimistic. Before we get too excited for 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong, we'll get another MonsterVerse primer in Godzilla: King of the Monster, a remake of the 1956 original, set for release in 2019 starring Millie Bobbie Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Vera Farmiga.

Is it time to take the MonsterVerse seriously? Chime in!
