Guillermo del Toro's 'Nightmare Alley' begins production

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Let the countdown commence!

Guillermo del Toro’s study on showbiz and its sleazy inhabitants has begun production.

Earlier this week J. Miles Dale, Producer, announced the exciting news in this Tweet to fans. Among the known “regulars” are del Toro, Dale (The Shape of Water) and Cinematographer Dan Laustsen (Crimson Peak, The Shape of Water).

Guillermo del Toro's adaptation is based on Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel of the same name. Bradley Cooper headlines the star-studded cast as Stanton Carlisle, ruthless hustler who preys on the wealthy and weak. Cate Blanchett plays Dr. Lilith Ritter and Toni Collette plays Zeena Krumbein; two leads who are central to Carlisle's story arc. Rooney Mara plays Stanton's younger lover-turned-wife Molly, who eventually walks away from the couple's cons.

And if those folks weren't enticing enough, there's David Strathairn, who replaced Michael Shannon, cast as Zeena's (Colette) alcoholic husband Pete. Willem Dafoe will play the “head barker at a traveling carnival” ushering Stanton into a world of show biz and grifting. And Mindhunter’s Holt McCallany recently joined the cast as Anderson, “a get-the-job-done bruiser with more going on that is first apparent from his tough guy persona.”

Fox Searchlight has yet to peg a theatrical release but it's a good bet Nightmare Alley is poised for a 2021 Awards push.

You looking forward to this?
