HBO confirms 'DEADWOOD' movie will begin production this fall

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor After eleven years HBO is officially reviving Deadwood.

The announcement came from HBO President, Casey Bloys at the annual Television Critics Association summer press tour. At this time, little details are known other than HBO has officially greenlit a film and production is slated to begin October in the State of California.

Additionally Bloys speculated the Deadwood film would debut Spring 2019 - which seems pretty aggressive - and past Deadwood helmer Dan Minahan has been tapped to direct. When asked when the film will pick up in terms of timelines Bloys was rather tight lipped but according to earlier statements, Bloys told TV Line that Series creator David Milch "totally delivered" on a script that he says is "terrific." Which is a ringing endorsement we’ll roll with for now.

As reported last April, Deadwood was one of nine films granted California’s tax credit, which indicated the premium network had every intention of reviving David Milch’s Emmy-winning series for the big screen. While it was no lock that HBO would accept California’s tax credit, we knew that if this project were to be greenlit, an announcement would be made around this time since production companies taking advantage of California’s tax credit must start principle photography within 180 days of being approved.

The next hurdle will be casting. Stay tuned as we hear more!
