Jamie Foxx to star in Blumhouse Productions 'Spawn' reboot

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Much like James O’Barr’s upcoming ‘Crow’ reboot, Blumhouse looks to resurrect a brand of 90’s cult heroism in Todd McFarlane’s dark, R-rated Spawn reboot with Jamie Foxx as their lead.

The 50-year old Oscar winner is confirmed to star in Blumhouse Productions Spawn redux. According to Deadline, Foxx is set to play the titular antihero who first debuted in Todd McFarlane’s 1992 Spawn issue #1.

In the comics, Spawn tells the story of Al Simmons, a retired Marine vet and CIA assassin who was brutally murdered by his employer and former friend Jason Wynn. After being set ablaze and sent to hell, Al makes a deal with the devil to return to earth so he can see his wife. Of course, his return is not all that its cracked up to be after he finds out his family has moved on and the devil he now serves wants the Hellspawn warrior to initiate the apocalypse.

New Line adapted Spawn for the big screen in 1997 which starred Michael Jai White as McFarlane’s antihero. After achieving moderate box office success, McFarlane went on to create a two-time Emmy award winning animated Spawn miniseries for HBO in 1998 and 1999. Fans wouldn’t hear again from Spawn’s creator until 2009, when McFarlane announced a new screenplay was in the works for a “creepy” and “scary” R-rated Spawn positioned for an older audience.

Here we are, nearly ten years later and McFarlane is set to make his directorial debut from a script that he says will "challenge [Spawn] aficionados and newcomers" with the simple question “do you believe?”. If so, McFarlane says fans better prepare for an insane ride that will play on fear telling Deadline “if you want to see something creepy and powerful where you go, ‘just what the hell was that?’ I’m not going to explain how Spawn does what he does; he is just going to do it.”

There are a lot of ifs at play here but it’s hard to deny everything we’re hearing including the fact Jason Blum and Jamie Foxx are now behind McFarlane’s vision.

Blumhouse has yet to set a production date but nabbing Jamie Foxx is a start that piques my interest. How about yours?
