Josh Brolin talks ‘Sicario 3’ and the return of Emily Blunt

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor We’ll try not to get ahead of ourselves since we don’t even know how "Sicario 2" aka Day of Soldado unfolds! But let me assure you, it's perfectly ok to nod your head with approval when Josh Brolin talks about "Sicario 3."

In speculative news, Josh Brolin - star of Infinity War, Deadpool, and the soon-to-be released Sicario: Day of Soldado - dropped an interesting sound bite as it relates to a possible third Sicario installment!

Brolin was a recent guest on WTF with Marc Maron dishing on all things career and lifework related. When touching on Stefano Sollima's Sicario: Day of Soldado, the former Goonie's heartthrob teased plans for a third "Sicario" film possibly involving the return of Emily Blunt's character, Kate Macer.

During the interview Brolin shared ❝ If [Soldado] is good enough, then we'll make another one...Emily is not in this particular one, but she may be in one in the future

While it's hard not to get excited about a possible third installment, much less see Emily Blunt's return, we have zero clue if Soldado will be any good and/or will make enough money to justify its June 29 summer release. While Sicario achieved moderate box office success, grossing $80M worldwide and $46M domestically on a $30M budget, Soldado's summer release presents a higher risk, higher reward venture especially when you consider it's bookended by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp.

But if anything, Brolin's comments indicate the creative heads are thinking about a third installment and might have a few scenarios that could reinsert Blunt's vigilant FBI agent in a story that possibly occurs before or after the events of Sicario or Sicario: Day of Soldado. In a 2016 interview with The Wrap, screenwriter Taylor Sheridan confirmed Macer's "arc was complete." But that wasn't without an effort to fit Macer into Soldado's story. According to Sheridan "I couldn't figure out a way to write a character that would do [Emily's] talent justice." He also didn't rule out Emily’s return stating “there could be room for Kate somewhere else down the road.”

For now, we'll approach Brolin's comments with cautious optimism. You down for Emily Blunt’s return?

Sicario: Day of Soldado hits theaters June 29, 2018.
