Scott Derrickson to direct TriStar Pictures 'LABYRINTH' sequel

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Who's gonna put that baby spell on me?

Scott Derrickson will tackle the sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 magical creation - Labyrinth!

Despite the encouraging news, not much is known outside of Derrickson and writer Maggie Levin's (Into the Dark) involvement. The duo marks TriStar’s second known attempt to resurrect Jim Henson’s trippy fairytale featuring David Bowie as an eccentric and smooth singing "Goblin King" who feasts his eyes on turning Jennifer Connelly’s adorable baby brother into a GOBLIN.

The short history of Labyrinth's resurrection dates back to 2016. Captain Marvel’s Nicole Perlman penned a script in which Don’t Breathe’s Fede Alvarez signed on to direct what he described as “a direct continuation of the first movie many years later”. Of course, that same year the world mourned the loss of David Bowie and since then, Alvarez stepped down for reasons I’m sure many Labyrinth purists can certainly - read between the lines - and appreciate.

But now that TriStar is reloading for another try, the question remains - What direction do Levin and Derrickson intend to take the story? Conventional wisdom says you can't have a sequel without featuring Jennifer Connelly's return as Sarah and/or Sarah's younger brother - Tobey, or possible teenagers of Sarah and Tobey's now adult-age households. For the record, I have ZERO knowledge of the comic spin-offs. And then there's the elephant in the room. How in the hell do you sequelize an original recipe without its cherished antagonist, David Bowie as the Goblin King!?!?

Clearly I am not one to answer that question. And perhaps the Studio heads have a perfectly fine explanation that is sure to include the words honor and legacy.

What say you?
