The 3D restoration was a project initiated by Cameron’s production company (Lightstorm Entertainment), along with DMG Entertainment and StudioCanal. Similar to the Titanic 3D conversion, T2's conversion was supervised in its entirety, frame-by-frame, by Cameron along with Lightstorm's team of 1,400 artists and technicians taking nearly a year to complete but will allow fans to "see the movie in a way that you have never seen it before,” according to Head of Distrib Films US François Scippa-Kohn.

Box office results from T2 3D's exclusive first-week run at AMC theaters will determine how it proceeds in the following week, according to Distrib Films US. Ticket sales for this past weekend's opening earned around $562,000 at 463 3D screens, which is not a great sign when compared to 2013's Top Gun's $1.9 million 3D opening (which also played in IMAX) and Raiders of the Lost Ark's re-release in 2012 earning $1.6 million. Titanic 3D grossed $17 million in over 2600 theaters in 2012.

TriStar released the original Terminator 2: Judgment Day in July 1991, grossing over $204.8M in the U.S. box office and $520 million worldwide.
