'Top Gun: Maverick' will feature the return of Goose's Son

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Looks like a ghost from Maverick's past will come back to haunt him...

One of the less talked about gems in Tony Scott's 1986 testosterone driven power-ballad is Meg Ryan's high octane, quirky and loveable character Carole Bradshaw. A character synonymous with "Take me to be bed or lose me forever", or for you downers like me -SPOILER-, the widower of Anthony Edwards' "Goose" Nick Bradshaw and mother of their son, Wrigley. Right - did you forget about Wrigley?

In an exclusive from The Hashtag Show, it appears we have not seen the last of the Bradshaw clan and we're not talking about a Meg Ryan cameo! Goose and Carole's now All-American son, Wrigley will join in on Maverick's character arc for the upcoming sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

So here's what we know -Wrigley, now in his 20's is your WASPy handsome all-America athlete who, like his father, joins the Naval academy presumably at Miramar's Top Gun school. Though it's unknown if Maverick plays the instructor or mentor/mentee role or both, we know Wrigley has a deep seeded distrust of Maverick and dislikes what he stands for. After all, Maverick is "dangerous." But despite their similarities, Wrigley comes to respect Maverick. His call sign - RIOT.

The fine folks at Hashtag also released additional character details and believe it or not, none of them include our beloved call signs Charlie, Iceman, Viper, Jester, Merlin, Wolfman, Slider, Hollywood, or James Tolkian's Stinger . With Kelly McGillis’s "Charlie" not set to return, it appears Maverick has his sights set on a new love interest by the name of Penny Benjamin - sister of Admiral Robby "Caspar" Benjamin, who like others, is NOT a fan of Maverick's gifted but selfish flying ways.

I'm sensing a familiar theme?

Anyhow, feel free to nerd-out by reading the rest of the character descriptions below. Any suggestions as to whom Paramount and Cruise should cast as Wrigley? How about Ansel Elgort, Armie Hammer or Lucas Till?

My dislike for the call signs - below - only means I will come to LOVE them come July 12, 2019:

RIOT FKA WRIGLEY: Supporting Male (20-29) Goose’s son. All-American good looks. Rode a football scholarship to an Ivy League degree. He is in love with Sugar. He is forced to eject in enemy territory and Maverick comes to save him.

PENNY BENJAMIN Supporting Female (40-55) The mother of “Miriam” and sister of “Caspar.” She is tough and has been around pilots all her life. She resists Maverick at first, but his charm wears her down. Maverick falls in love with her and “Miriam.”
