Happy Death Day: Get Up. Live Your Day. Get Killed. Again....

GregHarmon GregHarmon Managing Editor Blumhouse Productions latest slasher feels refreshingly original for a film that's disguised as Scream meets Edge of Tomorrow (or Groundhog Day).

I'm supposed to keep dying in order to figure out who my killer is?

The trailer for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions Happy Death Day was a pleasant surprise having sat through at least a dozen or so forgettable trailers during my 'IT' screening. For those who are fans of the genre, I recommend you check out the trailer!

Happy Death Day follows college student Tree Gelban (Jessica Rothe - La La Land) who is murdered on the day of her birthday by a killer sporting a wicked baby mask. In what appears to be a dream, Tree awakes the next day only to find out the dream is indeed a reality and she must relive the same day over again resulting in the same sequence of events leading up to her murder.

While the premise feels a bit preposterous in logic, Happy Death Day's intrigue resides in one question - If you were given an unlimited amount of lives in order to solve your own murder, how would that play out?

If you watch the trailer and I recommend you do, it's clear Director and co-writer Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity franchise, Disturbia) has not crafted your conventional slasher. And that's okay. Sure, the pieces are all there - we have an ominous murderer, our presumed final girl and a cast of usual suspects. But it's Death Day's preposterous time-looping proposition that adds a unique layer for a sub-genre that could use the spark. While Happy Death Day may not come close to rivaling Wes Craven's game-changing Scream, I'm buying into the elements that made Edge of Tomorrow and Groundhog Day so great.

Someone tell me this has been done before in either horror genre or slasher sub-genre? Check out the trailer and decide for yourself!

Happy Death Day arrives in theaters October 13, 2017 (US) and October 20 (UK).
